

South Sound Exotic Bird Society (SSEBS) in Olympia, WA is celebrating its twenty-fifth anniversary this year. The organization is registered as a nonprofit corporation in the State of Washington under UBI # 601100 697.
History:
SSEBS was founded in 1984. The Society began as a social gathering of parrot (psittacine) enthusiasts who wanted to learn more about the breeding, care and diets of caged birds. Over time, the group's focus expanded to include more than social activities to the mission of today, described on the Home page of this website.
Examples of Activities:
- Periodic meetings with educational programs.
- Establishment of an annual Expo in Olympia to raise funds for donation to worthy parrot-related causes and research.
- Establishment of a financial donation program to make dollar donations quarterly to qualifying organizations and projects.
- Provide information to groups and individuals about the various aspects of living with a companion parrot.
- Act as a resource for the general public regarding rescue, rehoming and behavioral problems related to being a caregiver for a companion parrot(s).
- Preparation and delivery of training for Animal Services officers related to pet store inspection and care of Psitticines under jurisdiction of Animal Services.
- Handle rehoming cases for unwanted or relinquished companion parrots.
- Participate with Animal Services in handling cases involving avian species.
- Produce and distribute educational materials about parrots.
- Production of a special appearance and book signing in Olympia of Mark Bittner, author and star of The Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill, as part of a special SSEBS fund raising event which included presentation of Mark’s movie at the Olympia Film Society.

- Pionus Parrot Research Foundation; primary research fieldwork in Mindo Ecuador on parrots in the Pionus Species
- Parrot Welfare organizations: The Gabriel Foundation (CO) and The Oasis (AZ)
- Research about the Cognitive Learning and Communication Abilities of Parrots as Intelligent Beings: The Alex Foundation (Waltham, MA)
